Matt Lauer and the 'Today' show are constantly facing an assault from the media. And the latest rumors that Lauer and Natalie Morales had an affair aren't helping their ratings battle against 'Good Morning America.' So is the 'Today' show in serious trouble?

The Today show is always plagued by rumors, and now there are reports that producers want to shake things up. But will Natalie Morales' move to Los Angeles help or hurt the show?

Morales is heading to California to co-host Access Hollywood. She will no longer host the 9 a.m. hour of Today, but she will still appear most days as the West Coast anchor.

"from @todayshow as a Bon voyage! @savannahguthrie @kuocl @kerrybtoday!" Natalie Morales wrote on Instagram.

Today and Good Morning America have been in a ratings battle that only intensified after Michael Strahan left Live! With Kelly & Michael for GMA. For the week of July 4th, Good Morning America came in at No. 1, though it did fall six percent in total viewers. Today, though, has been the No. 1 morning show in the key demo, and it has held that spot for 44 out of the last 45 weeks.

Still, rumors have been swirling that Today wants to shake things up now that Strahan has moved to GMA. Today was the top show for years, but GMA’s ratings went back up in 2012 after Ann Curry left Today. Today has done better since then, but GMA has been planning a major ratings push. To combat that, NBC moved Morales to Los Angeles.

On top of the ratings battle, Today is constantly facing rumors. So when the latest reports came out claiming Morales and Matt Lauer had an affair, he had had enough. So he called in to The Mike Lupica Podcast to set the record straight. “When you feel your family is being threatened and hurt, you speak up. And then you put your head down and go back about your business,” he said.

Lauer also told Page Six, “Every aspect of this story is untrue, and it’s frankly sad that someone would tell lies to harm everyone involved.” And Morales called the rumors “completely absurd” and “damaging, hurtful and extremely sexist.”

On the Lupica podcast, Lauer also addressed Ann Curry’s controversial exit from Today in 2012 and the show's subsequent drop in ratings. Curry was fired back in 2012 following tension with Lauer. According to media reporter Brian Stelter, Curry and Lauer’s poor chemistry was used as a scapegoat when Today couldn’t beat GMA’s ratings. But in the Lupica interview, Lauer praised the Today staff for keeping morale up and said the drop in ratings was due to overconfidence.

The Today show has been struggling over the last few years. And Lauer has faced a constant assault by the media ever since Curry left. He didn't just explode because he was upset about the latest affair rumor. That was just the final straw.
